'Snow White and the Huntsman' Is Nightmarish in a Good Way

Stewart, meanwhile, is an effective, if sometimes strangely inscrutable, Snow White. The young actress clearly sees the character less as a fairy tale princess, and more as a lonely young woman who has spent her entire adolescence trapped inside a tower. There is brittle strength to her Snow White, even in the character's softer moments, which makes sense given the fact that naive vulnerability has never been a quality Stewart wears particularly well.

Hemsworth is likably gruff as the Huntsman, a drunk widower who gradually begins to find purpose in his life through protecting Snow White. There's also a "prince" of sorts, Snow's childhood friend William (Sam Claflin), and a pack of dwarves that are played by non-dwarf actors who've been reduced by special effects (Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost, Eddie Marsan, Toby Jones, Brian Gleeson, Johnny Harris). The motley crew helps Snow White along the way, but in the end it is she alone who must vanquish Ravenna.

The conflicts at the heart of the Snow White fable—age vs. youth, physical beauty vs. inner beauty—are present and accounted for in this version, but many other aspects have been reimagined. The most successful of these moments is the famous apple eating scene, which is deftly done and genuinely surprising. And if you hadn't already gathered this from the title of the movie, the iconic wake-up kiss has a twist as well.

There are various problems in the story of Snow White and the Huntsman—why didn't Ravenna kill Snow White when she was a child? Why is Snow White "destined" to breathe life into the dead land and destroy the queen? What is this furry white stag and why do we care that she's petting it? Why even bother with William at all when we've already got the vastly more interesting Huntsman? But in the end there is enough good stuff, both visually and performance-wise, to overcome the movie's faults. It's a glossy new version of the classic tale that gives us a heroine for the modern age. Gone is the girl who sings to the birds and requires a prince to rescue her. In her place stands a strong young woman who fights her own battles and, ultimately, saves herself.

After years of being sidelined by Cinderella and young upstarts like the Little Mermaid, Snow White has suddenly become the most popular girl in school. ABC has the apple-eating heroine at the center of its series Once Upon a Time, and earlier this year Relativity Media offered up the campy Mirror Mirror starring Lily Collins. Now comes Snow White and the Huntsman, director Rupert Sanders' gothic take on the classic Grimm fable.

But this is not the technicolor Disney version of Snow White that you grew up with. No, this is a dark, violent world that is filled with the stench of decay. Death hangs over the land, and there are vast shots of scorched Earth and nightmarish forests filled with noxious gases and hoards of creeping insects. This is a world where phantom armies shatter into razor-sharp shards of black obsidian, mirrors pool into liquid gold figures, and evil queens morph into flocks of ravens at a moment's notice. Sanders' imagery in the film, equal parts beautiful and cruel, is wildly inventive and at times absolutely breathtaking. The special effects are top-notch, which is impressive considering this is the director's first feature film.

But there is more to Snow White and the Huntsman than just visual effects. The film is anchored by a trio of generally strong performances from Kristen Stewart as Snow White, Charlize Theron as the evil queen Ravenna, and Chris Hemsworth as the titular Huntsman. Theron, in particular, seems to be having a ball playing the sinister Ravenna, who isn't blindly evil but rather is intent on extracting a sort of feminist revenge on the kingdom that once took everything away from her. She is obsessed with youth and sucks away the lives of young women to help maintain it. But that is only because she knows (rightly so) that youth and beauty are powerful tools in a world that tends to discard women as they age. Ravenna is the film's villain, but one cannot help but sympathize with her when she bitterly bellows, "I will give this wretched world the queen that it deserves."

Adam Levine is kind of like saying Adele is a bit of a singer

"There's two kinds of men," he told the magazine. "There are men who are f-cking misogynist pigs, and then there are men who just really love women, who think they're the most amazing people in the world. And that's me. Maybe the reason I was promiscuous, and wanted to sleep with a lot of them, is that I love them so much."

It should be noted that the Voice judge made a respectable run at long-term monogamy with Victoria's Secret model Anne V. When the two split in April after two years, we openly wondered which VS Angel he might date next. In his new interview though, it sounds like Adam wants to be known for his intellectual side as much as, if not more than, his rockstar side.

"I've always felt a little misrepresented in the world," he said of his decision to join The Voice. "I felt like people only knew me as a singer who dated pretty girls. A little bit of a bimbo. Maybe I was kind of a bimbo. I was the music dude that was naked all the time with the girls, and that's fine, no problem with that. But I wanted to create a little balance. When the show came around, I thought, 'People now know that I have a brain.'"

But don't worry. Adam still has important rockstar things on his brain. We'll leave you with this little excerpt from the Details piece.

"You know what yoga's good for?" Adam Levine asks, pausing in mid-thought as he discusses his healthful lifestyle. He draws to his feet, balances in the private jet's narrow aisle, points at his crotch, and thrusts his pelvis like a porn star. "I'll tell you what yoga is good for: F----ck-ing," he chimes, in a singsong falsetto, then laughs.

In case you haven't heard, Adam Levine is a bit of a ladies man—which is kind of like saying Adele is a bit of a singer, or Angelina Jolie is a bit of a looker. He's dated, been linked to, hooked up with, or been spotted with a list of high-profile ladies that should earn him a pat on the back from George Clooney if the two ever meet.

A new profile of the Maroon 5 singer in Details magazine does not shy away from this reputation, and Adam admirably owns up to it. Of course he does this with a quote worthy of a lifted eyebrow. Lay it on us Adam, why have you slept with so many hot ladies?

Are we in for a very different kind of Jersey Shore this season

The Jersey Shore is currently filming its sixth season. The spin-off series, Snooki & JWoww, premieres on Thursday, June 21 at 10pm.

• Tim Daly has already been axed from Private Practice, and according to a new report from Deadline, Kate Walsh may also be on her way out. The actress, who has played Dr. Addison Montgomery for seven years (two on Grey's Anatomy and five on Private Practice), signed on for the show's upcoming 13 episodes, but after that she will reportedly depart the series.

• The fourth season of White Collar premieres on July 10 at 9/8c on USA, and we've got your first look at what's in store for Neal (Matt "Congrats on Your Face" Bomer) and Peter (Tim DeKay). You can check out the new Season 4 trailer here to find out what's in store for our favorite con man and his ex-FBI handler.

• Swedish born actress Katia Winter is joining the seventh season of Dexter. The actress, who is best known for her role opposite Kellan Lutz in the feature film Arena, will play a Russian stripper who works in a Miami club. Jason Gedrick was previously cast as the owner of the club where Winter's character works.

• Stand-up great Jerry Seinfeld is rumored to be making an appearance on the upcoming season of FX's Louie, which premieres on June 28. FX would not comment on the rumor, but we're just going to go ahead and cross our fingers and toes that it's true.

• DVR Watch: Best Friends Forever wraps up its funny, underwatched first season with two back-to-back episodes (NBC, 8pm & 8:30pm), Fairly Legal has Ben and Kate going to Tahoe to settle a dispute but they end up getting caught up in an unsolved murder (USA, 9pm), Curtis does community service on Tyler Perry's House of Payne (TBS, 9pm), and a woman's murder is linked to an online dating site on Common Law (USA, 10pm).

Are we in for a very different kind of Jersey Shore this season?

We already know that Snooki is pregnant and will therefore not be the font of drunken debauchery that she once was. Now word comes that when the cast of the Shore went out to a bar last night, NO ONE drank. Apparently Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino, who recently spent time in rehab for problems related to perscription pills and alcohol abuse, chose not to drink and the rest of the cast followed his lead in a show of solidarity.

While it's tremendous that Sorrentino and his castmates are committed to his recovery, booze-free bar nights just don't feel like the Jersey Shore we all know and love. Are our favorite guidos and guidettes finally growing up? Are we in for a season of Scrabble nights and polite discourse? Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Suprised:Adam Levine Spotted Kissing Victoria's Secret Model Behati Prinsloo

Believe it or not, Levine, 33, has admitted some insecurity about his ladies' man reputation. He recently told Details magazine that his desire to establish himself as a real thinker led him to join The Voice: "I felt like people only knew me as a singer who dated pretty girls. A little bit of a bimbo. Maybe I was kind of a bimbo. I was the music dude that was naked all the time with the girls, and that's fine, no problem with that. But I wanted to create a little balance. When the show came around, I thought, 'People now know that I have a brain.'"

Maroon 5's Adam Levine is the first to admit that he really, really loves the ladies. And as the frontman of one of the most overplayed bands of the past decade, he's had the opportunity to love ladies who pose in their underwear for a living, the latest being Victoria's Secret model Behati Prinsloo.

According to the Daily Mail, Levine and Prinsloo were photographed engaging in some non-platonic relations at a friend's pre-wedding party in Kauai, Hawaii, on May 28. While rockers have been dating making out with models for decades, this pairing is particularly interesting given that Prinsloo is reportedly "good friends" with Levine's ex-girlfriend, Anne Vyalitsyna. Levine loves the ladies so much, he just can't avoid planting kisses on his ex's former co-workers.

Again Madonna Fires a Shot at Lady Gaga

TMZ reports that the case will be referred to the LA County D.A. for possible criminal prosecution. The investigation is ongoing, and the police have requested an interview with Bieber, who is currently in Norway. If Bieber is charged and convicted, he could face up to six months in jail.

So that's the bad news. The good news for Bieber fans is that the long weekend also saw the release of a new song. Following his "Boyfriend" single, Bieber has dropped another track off his upcoming Believe. Unlike "Boyfriend," which went for a Justin Timberlake "SexyBack" kind of vibe, "Die in Your Arms" is more of a sunny pop song a la the Jackson 5. It's sure to make tween girls across the world swoon. And for those worried about how Bieber's post-pubescent voice holds up, there's a heavy dose of autotune to put those concerns to rest. Have a listen to the new track below.

  •  The fires of the Lady Gaga/Madonna flame war have been stoked once again thanks to footage from Madge's recent concert rehearsal in Tel Aviv. As she is wont to do (see: Elton John, hydrangeas, etc.), Madonna previously made a fuss over Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," claiming the song was a rip-off of her own 1989 track, "Express Yourself."

In the condescending, passive-aggressive fashion that has unfortunately become Madonna's trademark, she told Newsweek back in January, "["Born This Way"] is a wonderful way to redo my song "Express Yourself." I mean, I recognized the chord changes. I thought it was… interesting." Now, as if to prove her point, Madonna is incorporating Gaga's song into her tour.

The rehearsal footage (right) captured before her show in Israel reveals a mash-up of "Express Yourself" and "Born This Way." To drive things home, Madonna finishes with lyrics from her 2008 Hard Candy hit "She's Not Me." Zing! To Madonna's credit, hearing the mash-up of the two songs makes it hard to deny their striking similarities.

  •  They say you should never compare yourself to anybody, but apparently that's not the case when it comes to reality TV judging salaries. According to TMZ, Britney Spears had one very specific stipulation before signing her contract with X Factor: She had to make more than Jennifer Lopez did for her first season of American Idol. J.Lo's salary that year was a cool $12 mil, which made Britney's minimum $13 million.

According to X Factor sources talking to TMZ, Spears started negotiations around $20 million before settling with Simon Cowell and company at the highly-publicized $15 million mark. The question now is what Britney's salary will mean for Lopez when she sits down to work out a new deal with Idol. Given the precedent and the level of diva-ness involved in the situation, it's safe to assume J.Lo won't stand for anything less than what Britney's making, but with Idol having it's lowest ratings in years, can they afford it?

  •  It's been a busy couple of days for one of music's biggest names. Over the weekend Justin Bieber got in a bit of a scrap with a member of the paparazzi when the photog tried to snap a shot of Justin and his lady love Selena Gomez. The photographer was rushed to the hospital after complaining of chest pains (he was released soon after) and is accusing the 18-year-old pop star of battery.

In today's music news, it's a good news/bad news situation for Justin Bieber fans, Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez have paycheck envy, and Lady Gaga gets dissed by Madonna.
